Message Refresh moteur Sport160

There are a number of options to improve the S160- (have you had the Lotus ecu Reflash upgrade?) The cam pullies are std, this is no good as the cams need proper positioning to allow the car to run better. There is also the point that the headwork is known to be POOR, while the Inlet is good(but improvable) the exh is rubbish- you can see flow figures on my website highliting that point.

I have reworked three S160 only, the result has been fantastic on the two that took the proper road of improvement- the third was improved but he took a simpler road due to cost restraints. Basically the head does not work as it should & the exh cam while a raher nice specification is too aggressive for the application. So the head needs reworking & the exh cam changed, verniers to time the cams properly.

The final 'Hurdle' is the Ecu, any pyhsical changes should also be backed up by Ecu mapping on a rollingroad- the EFI ecu can be remapped though most people fit an Emerald or another easier mappable Ecu.

The std pistons are at a limit on 170hp- it is well known that the 160 reach already a good 160hp which is near the piston limit. On the reworked cars I have had between 180 and 185hp . You can change the pistons but as with all things, I do not know how far you wish to go, how much is your budget etc
I send a photo of the valveguides from a S160, the heads are machined by a CNC machine & in the process do a truly bad thing in cutting the guides off in the ports- you can see all these, the shorter guides cut at an angle- this is VERY bad- see the picture I attach. In the picture you can see the machined items, there is also 'Std' items amongst them for comparisen as well as a 'Calsibro' nickel bronze guide(long darker guide)

So suggestions- for power/reliability fit the VVC 160 pistons & new liners- On british E bay there is a person selling NEW assemblies & you will NOT find a better price- listed as Turbo/VVC 160 pistons( in boxes marked 'Nural') & sold with 'Goetze'(genuine) liners. The headwork is involved- ALL the guides need replacing, all the valves need replacing for a couple of reasons(I can explain why) plus improved valvesprings- you will also need Vernier/adjustable Cam wheels, + to replace the exh cam(we could make a deal on that) & finally mapping- it's up to you to try to remap the EFI, but it would likely be better to Replace the existing ecu for simplicity BUT BUT all this is not very cheap. It will give you a really powerfull motor with good torque but as I say it is not very cheap to do the best work possible. The car will not look different, just go very much better.

Thoughts? questions?

Roger

The Efi is a very good ecu & I know we can put a pretty good map into it. Not much places can map them, I have been told by a very good mapper here who does map them that the EFI system is very complex compared to other modern systems- things may have improved since I spoke to him a year ago over efi ecu mapping. I m pretty sure Steve Greenald of 'Race engine calibrations' in rainham, Essex could do a great job at mapping it as he has huge experience at setting up very exotic racing machines and he knows well the EFI.
I also have good relation with Ole Buhl of Efi in Ringwood in Hampshire, in case I can get all infos needed from him as well.

Yes I can take the car & do the work in my workshop
Eek, an estimate of the work, better if you could call me one more time to discuss details. Many areas that we can improve also throw up 'options'- such as, if we fit the uprated VVC 160 pistons we can also fit the improved VVC big end bearings? also there is the uprated Landrover oilrail for in the sump- these the headbolts screw into, i think these 2 options worth to be used but other things can snowball if we dont define a limit.

Will you wish to upgrade the Coolant system with a Prt/prrt??, will you expect a cambelt assembly change?? this is not as dumb a question as it sounds! Have you changed the antifreeze for the newer OAT long life?? do you want the antifreeze changed?? If we fit the better pistons, the engine will need to be 'Run in', this means NO motorway travel to return to belgium!! The engine will require at LEAST 500mls to 'Bed the rings in' by greatly varied driving- failure to do this will leave the engine smoking & using oil etc & likely reduce performance to some degree- soooo, it would likely be nesesary for you to take a few days holiday to come over & 'Drive' your car around to run it in- I cannot do this for you.
